METTLER TOLEDO, leading manufacturer of operating and self-service scales in the retail sector, presents the first talking scale for the fruit and vegetable sector in co-operation with Online Software AG


Giessen / Weinheim, 05 March 2020 +++ Scale specialist METTLER TOLEDO has developed an innovative self-service scale that recognises items with the help of AI (artificial intelligence)-supported image analysis and makes contact with customers at the POS using voice via an intuitive interface.
Based on AI-supported optical image recognition, the METTLER TOLEDO FreshWay family of scales identifies the product to be weighed fully automatically. The scale uses a modern voice input and output system to answer a wide range of questions about the product, such as its origin, ingredients or certifications (e.g. FairTrade), thereby increasing confidence in the food. Questions about allergens, product storage or recipe suggestions will also no longer go unanswered in future, giving consumers security and transparency.
The scale was developed in-house by METTLER TOLEDO, while the voice interface was developed by partner Online Software AG specifically to meet the needs of customers in the O&G sector. Via an additional interface to the PRESTIGEenterprise store advertising system, almost all answers can be displayed on a screen and, at the customer's request, printed out on the scale.
The advantages of such comprehensive, language-based information for the customer are obvious: comprehensive transparency in the food sector. Many consumers are quite prepared to spend more money on regional and organic food. Regional commitment on the part of both retailers and the food industry is recognised by customers and positively strengthens their image. The talking scales impressively demonstrate this to the customer for the product they have selected.

The artificial intelligence (AI) behind the language-based system is constantly learning. Potato, Grumbeere or Erdapfel - different regional terms for one and the same vegetable. Dialects and dialects can all be learnt by the AI behind the language-based system. The first pilot installations of this innovative application are already being planned.
